Chorale and Vocal Jazz Auditions 2021/2022

Auditions for next year’s advanced choirs are happening now! I’m so glad you’re interested in being a part of the Hale Choir Community.

There are 3 choirs at Hale:

  • Concert Choir is our entry-level, non-auditioned group. Anyone can join! In Concert Choir, students learn the fundamentals of ensemble singing (solfege, reading music, singing techniques) to set a foundation to continue to the higher levels of choir. We participate in concerts, exchanges with other schools and local festivals.
  • Chorale is our mid-level auditioned ensemble where students are expected to already have a grasp on the skills taught in Concert Choir. Students who have already taken (and passed) Concert Choir do not need to audition for Chorale. In Chorale we will continue building music-reading skills and singing techniques, but with more advanced music. We participate in concerts, exchanges with other schools, and local festivals.
  • Vocal Jazz is our advanced auditioned group of highly driven and enthusiastic musicians who meet during 0 period (7:50-8:40 am) to rehearse a diverse range of music within the genre of jazz. We perform frequently for events at Hale, around the city, in local festivals, and do some out of state traveling.

All students are welcome to audition for Chorale and Vocal Jazz, but because these ensembles are select, not all will be accepted. If you audition and are not selected, you are highly encouraged to join Hale’s Concert Choir. In Concert Choir, you will learn the fundamentals of music reading and ensemble singing that you’ll need to try again for Chorale or Vocal Jazz the following year.

We’ll be doing auditions remotely again this year. Please click here for detailed instructions on what to include in your audition video. Audition videos are due by Sunday April 18, 2021.

Below are all of the materials you’ll need to prepare and submit your audition:

Once you have prepared the above materials and filmed your video, fill out this form to tell Ms. Ewell more about yourself. The final question will ask for a YouTube link to your video. Please upload your video as unlisted, so that only you and Ms. Ewell have access to it.

That’s it!

Vocal Jazz and Chorale Auditions!

Despite school closures, we have to keep moving forward to make music together next year. If you are interested in being a part of one of Hale’s auditioned vocal ensembles, you’ll find everything you need here.
If you’re interested in auditioning for VJ as an instrumentalist (we’re looking for a piano, bass, and guitar for next year) please email Ms. Ewell.

Please fill out the Audition Packet, which has specific instructions for what to include in your audition video for either group (you can audition for both in the same video if you want).

If you are auditioning for Vocal Jazz, you will need to learn Fly Me to the Moon in the key appropriate for your voice – C Major for Sopranos and Tenors, or Ab for Altos and Basses. Here’s the sheet music for both options. Instructions for where to improvise the second time through are in the audition packet.

Here are the backing tracks for Fly Me to the Moon. Your singing will start right at the top, so practice with the tracks for your recording to get that timing right. Please use only these tracks in your recording. Choose the one for your voice part.

If you are auditioning for Chorale, you will need to learn Shenandoah. Please sing just the first verse, a capella (without accompaniment), in this key (D Major). This song has some serious range, so if notes are too high or too low for you, see what you can do to make it work.

Once you’ve completed your video and your packet, upload your video to YouTube with a private link, and email that link and your packet to Ms. Ewell. Your audition needs to be submitted by Monday, May 18.

This is the first time we’ve done video auditions, and I’m sure there will be questions or concerns as you work through this. Please don’t hesitate to reach out if you need help! This is meant to be challenging, but I do want you to be successful! You can reach me at
